What To Expect From a Placement Year in a Digital Agency

In 2012 I was fortunate to be offered a placement year at Ponderosa Group as part of my Management degree at The University of York. I joined the team as an Account Executive working in the digital department and soon fell in love with the fast-paced energy of a marketing agency.

Deciding to take a year out of my studies wasn’t the easiest of choices. It required me to leave the comforts of the ‘university bubble’ and take a step into the world of real work. I left behind some close friends and had to accept the reality that I unfortunately wouldn’t be able to graduate with my friends who had been there through the first few years of my studies. However it was ultimately one of the best decisions I could have made for my career.

During my year at Ponderosa I had the opportunity to work closely with some fantastic clients and gained an insight into the inner workings of a creative agency. I learnt about the whole process of agency work, from receiving a brief from the client to seeing it all the way through to final sign-off. Ponderosa challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and learn all aspects of digital marketing from email marketing strategy to social media management.  From day one I knew that I was suited to this industry and dreaded the thought of leaving to finish my final year of studies!

However one year later I’m back at the agency after being offered a position as a Senior Digital Account Executive. Coming back to the agency after twelve months was a little daunting – but nevertheless an exciting opportunity with which to start my graduate career. The digital department at Ponderosa is continuing to grow from strength to strength and I’m excited to begin working with some great clients such as Crabbies Ginger Beer, Shire Hotels and Lambrini.

I cannot recommend enough to anyone considering a placement year as part of their degree to pursue this path, the opportunities and experiences it’s given me for my future career are priceless.
